District Highlights
Salem County Vocational Technical Schools (SCVTS) and the Penns Grove-Carneys Point Regional School District have partnered to expand the Academy of Engineering and Technologies curriculum. These increased curriculum opportunities resulted from a special task force, comprised of members of the engineering community, Rowan University, Salem Community College, and the SCVTS/PGCPRSD administrators.
The successful Culinary Arts and Hospitality Program has been expanded into a full-blown career academy with assistance from Georges Perrier, renowned chef, owner and creator of Philadelphi’a five-star Le-Bec Fin. With the enhanced culinary academy program, Career and Technical High School students have the opportunity for college level instruction, related instruction, and applied learning by preparing and serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner banquets and working at restaurants in the region. Upon the completion of the program, students may receive certification in Serv-Safe Training and Pro-Start 1 and 2.
College credit articulations agreements are in place with a number of colleges, universities, and culinary institutions in the region. The Graphics Technology program was expanded to include a full-time option. All full-time students may participate in advanced skill level courses and in a senior mentor experience and/or internship.
Looking Ahead
The SCVTS governing board and leadership team continue to work with the community and Staff Advisory Board to identify CTE and career academy programs to address student and county needs. As a result, a task force is studying the need and feasibility for an Academy of Energy and Power Generation. Task force members include representatives from PSEG/Exelon Nuclear, South Jersey Gas Company, Atlantic Electric, the Emergency Systems Service Company, Haz-Tek, Rowan University, and Salem Community College. A second task force includes a panel of experts assisting the district to infuse reading literacy skills throughout the curriculum to enhance CTE, academic, and related educational programs.
