Students Earn Two Diplomas for work at the Academy for Health and Medical Sciences
Nineteen students of the Academy for Health & Medical Sciences at Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School received their Associate's Degree in General Science from Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) last month - six weeks before they were to march in graduation ceremonies to receive their high school diplomas.
The unique program between RVCC and the Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTS) was created four years ago to grant dual enrollment to highly motivated students.
Michael A. Maddaluna, Superintendent of SCVTS, said he was proud of the dedication shown by the students, all of whom are continuing in college toward bachelor's degrees and many of whom are committed to careers in healthcare and the sciences.
"This first graduating class of our Academy for Health & Medical Sciences is filled with students who were highly motivated, dedicated, and committed to working harder in order to achieving their goals," he said. "These students didn't simply get two diplomas for the same work they would have done. They had to work harder than a typical high school student in order to advance their education."
The nineteen graduates will enter college two years ahead of their peers - saving time and costly tuition payments. The graduates have been accepted to Cornell University, Drew University, the College of New Jersey, Seton Hall University, Drexel University, Rutgers University, Rider University, Lycoming College, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the University of Massachusetts.
