Cape May County Tech Named "District of the Month" for December
December 4 , 2007, Cape May Court House, NJ -- Cape May County Technical School District was honored by the New Jersey Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools (NJCCVTS) as the "District of the Month."
Superintendent William E. Desmond was presented with the award by Council President Frank Gargiulo at the Council's December meeting held at Cape May Technical High School.
Cape May Tech was chosen in recognition of the school's unique career programs that respond to the regional economic needs of the county.
Among the specialized programs highlighted were the Academy of Travel and Tourism that allows students to operate their own 8-room motel and the highly-respected Natural Sciences Technology program, in which students are involved in projects ranging from banding ospreys to raising live oyster beds.
"Cape May Tech examplies how county vocational schools are leading the way in workforce development for the counties they serve. From the oyster beds to the motel, this school is preparing students for careers that help make Cape May one of the most desirable places to be in our great state," Gargiulo said.
During a presentation to superintendents and board members from throughout the state, Desmond said the school utilizes a year-long exploratory program for all incoming 9th graders to give them a taste of each career area before they choose a path of study.
The Council of County Vocational-Technical Schools is the statewide association of superintendents and board of education members of New Jersey's 21 county vocational-technical school districts. The Council was established in statute by the New Jersey Legislature to advise the Commissioner, State Board of Education and Legislature on issues affecting career and technical education. Member districts operate 60 schools throughout the state and educate about 84,000 students each year in high schools and adult programs.
