Business Partners of the Year: Monmouth County

2010—Monmouth County Parks System

The Monmouth County Parks System and the Monmouth County Vocational School District's Career Center Landscaping Program worked together on developing and creating a par-3 golf hole. The project is a continuation of the long cooperative partnership between the County Parks Department and the school district. The administration of both agencies worked to accommodate joint scheduling. Equipment and instruments needed were shared or procured by the county and school agencies. Expertise was shared so that planning, and executing needed procedures took place at necessary times. The cooperating County employees and MCVSD teachers jointly supervised students. Business partners from both agencies were used and provided free or discounted materials.

2009—Birdsall Engineering

Birdsall Engineering has been actively involved with Monmouth County's High Technology High School since its inception, with representatives sitting on the HTHS Advisory Board. Each semester at least one senior has the opportunity to work side-by-side with a Birdsall engineer as part of the school's Senior Mentorship Program. A number of HTHS graduates have been employed as summer interns at Birdsall, and others have become full time employees. Additionally, Birdsall has provided financial support by contributing to the PFA scholarship program and covering the expense of the alumni website.

2007—Sheraton Eatontown Hotel

The Sheraton Eatontown Hotel has housed a classroom of the Monmouth County Vocational School District's Culinary Education Center since 1999, providing yearlong externship experiences for over 96 secondary students. Thomas Riccardi, general manager of the Sheraton Eatontown Hotel, has been a strong supporter of the Culinary Education Center's philosophy to bring student into the workplace. As a partner of the Culinary Education Center, Mr. Riccardi permits students to work with a hotel employee in a culinary- related position to learn about the food-service industry and define their professional career goals. This partnership has resulted in the establishment of a unique and exemplary work-based Culinary Training Program. The goal of this initiative was to unite occupational training instructors and mentors to co-teach at a work-based training site for the development of high academic and workplace technical training skills for culinary students.

2006—Branning Institute of Collision Repair Technology

Monmouth County Vocational School District (MCVSD) has developed an exciting new partnership with the Branning Institute of Collision Repair Technology to effectively create an exciting work-based, offsite learning opportunity for shared-time Auto Collision students. Branning Institute has established a state-of-the-art facility complete with a working classroom and shop for students. Under class supervision by a MCVSD Auto Collision instructor, seniors work and learn by performing classroom instruction and hands-on training both in the Branning Institute and in their new large main production collision facility where students are exposed to customer relations, auto rentals, repair orders, estimates, auto detailing and all forms of collision repair. This dynamic partnership with Branning Institute empowers students with the cutting-edge skills that are mandatory in today's auto collision service industry.
