District Highlights
The district’s secondary program and the performing arts program are organized on a shared-time basis. The Performing Arts High School is located on the campus of the Mercer County Community College, allowing students in drama, dance, and vocal music to partake in an intensive course of study making use of all of the college resources. Mercer County Technical Schools also collaborate with Mercer County Community College by offering college courses in its Career Prep Program in a variety of areas of study including Fire Science, Criminal Justice, Aviation, Professional Cooking, Business Communications, Computer Networking and Radio and Television. These
programs offer qualified high school seniors the opportunity to complete up to 12 college credits while at the same time completing high school graduation requirements. The district sponsors adult, post-secondary programs as a means of fostering life-long learning as well as an alternative high school. The district also serves as the local educational agency for the county’s Fire Science Academy.
Looking Ahead
The district has proposed a comprehensive high school as part of its long-range improvement plan. Design schematics have been developed to convert shared-time facilities to a full-time educational program. The full-time program will include specialized
laboratories, performance venues, and academic classrooms for career programs in six distinct academies: Culinary Arts, Construction, Transportation, Personal and Health Services, Information Technology and the Performing Arts. Opportunities are also being investigated to expand programs included in the Career Prep program.
