In today's high-tech world, training for a career in automotive or machine technology means working with computers as much as with wrenches for diagnosis and repairs. County vocational-technical schools offer up-to-date, hands-on training to repair and maintain the mechanical and electronic systems on board today's vehicles.
Collision technology students learn to estimate cost of repairs and disassemble, repair and refinish vehicles using state-of-the-art tools and techniques. By working on their own vehicles, customers’ cars or even large vehicles like ambulances or fire vehicles, auto body students get the training they need to work in dealer-based and independent body shops.

When flood waters hit New Jersey in the spring of 2006, a South Bound Brook landscaping business owner lost much of his inventory. Students of Somerset County Vocational Technical School's small engine repair program worked daily to repair and restore the tractors, lawn mowers and other equipment that had been sitting in five feet of water.
The Blue Seal of Excellence -- found proudly hanging from a shop's shingle or worn on a uniform's shirt sleeve -- tells a customer that an automotive technician has been certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Training in county vocational-technical schools prepares students for this nationally-recognized certification so they are recognized as an industry professional before they even graduate! Students rack up certifications in a variety of specialized areas including brakes, electrical/electronic systems, steering and suspension, engine performance and engine repair.
